THE NEW HOUGHTON PARK MASTER PLAN

The Houghton Park Community Center is part of the soul of North Long Beach. It’s where people of all ages come to participate in hundreds of year-round activities. Each day, the center hosts an extensive list of active, inspiring choices including senior fitness programs, homework assistance for area students, arts and crafts and interesting events of all kinds. For some, the center provides a welcomed warm meal. And, at the heart of the center is a remarkable staff dedicated to enriching the lives of each and every visitor. But it’s time for a change. The original Community Center was built in 1930, updated in 1959 and expanded in 1987. While the center has done its job well, it’s time to look at how the park and community center can better serve the current and future generations of north long beach.

The City of Long Beach is on the path to building the new center. A diverse group of stakeholders are working together ensuring their vision, efforts and intensity are focused on a common goal – make the Houghton Park Community Center a reality.

OVERVIEW

Last year, the Houghton Park Community Center counted over 28,000 senior visits!

2015 Veterans Day Parade

Houghton park was again the kick-off point for the 2015 Veterans Day Parade in Long Beach. Atlantic Avenue was lined with spectators, enjoying the marching bands, civic groups, equestrian units and city officials. The Honorary Grand Marshall was Elizabeth Barba. Co-Grand Marshals, Allan Kobrick and Clifford A. Chaffee, both 100 years old, and WWII vets shared the day with World War II  veteran Howard Genrich.

The weather was ideal for a great day saluting our veterans.
